1. KIPO provides the Chinese to Korean machine translation service through KIPRIS from December 1, 2015

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that the Korean machine translation service of the Chinese patent information would be provided through the website (www.kipris.or.kr) of the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS), such that the Korean general public and companies, etc. entering China might easily understand the Chinese patent information to be more competitive.

This is done since not only Korean small and medium companies but also KIPRIS users have continuously requested a Korean machine translation service to help them use the patent information of China which is the biggest trade country of the Republic of Korea.

A spokesperson of KIPO said, ¡°[W]e expect that the Chinese to Korean machine translation service will solve the language barrier of Chinese patent information and be helpful in creating powerful patents when Korean companies advance into the Chinese market.¡±

2. KIPO held a counterstrategy seminar for a patent dispute in the Internet of Things (IoT) field

- Counterstrategies for future patent disputes in the IoT field were presented.

KIPO held the counterstrategy seminar for a patent dispute in the IoT field in the international conference room in the Korea Intellectual Property Service Center (Yeoksamdong, Gangnamgu, Seoul) on November 25, 2015.

This seminar was arranged to grasp Korean and foreign technology and patent dispute trends in the rapidly changing IoT market and to present a strategic scenario to prevent, in advance, a patent dispute which may occur in the future.

Major contents were:
¡ã Korean and foreign IoT-related technological trend (DooWon LEE, professor of Pusan National University),
¡ã Examination trend of Korean applications in IoT field (KwangSik KIM, deputy director of KIPO),
¡ã Counterstrategy scenario for a future patent dispute (KyungYong KIM, patent attorney of JiSung International Law Firm), and
¡ã Introduction of an information portal site of intellectual property right (IPR) disputes, (IP-NAVI), (KyungJin PARK, team leader of Korea Intellectual Property Protection Association).

3. Preparation for an international patent dispute is in IP-NAVI
- KIPO newly reorganized IP-NAVI which is an information portal site of international IPR disputes.

According to KIPO (Commissioner: DongKyu CHOI), the information portal site of international IPR disputes, (IP-NAVI, www.ip-navi.or.kr) has been newly reorganized to improve the users¡¯ conveniences and to provide services which will better support Korean small and medium companies in preparing for IPR disputes.

In the reorganized IP-NAVI, it is possible to more rapidly check most information, such as dispute information, precedent information, supportive programs, etc., without any member registration, unlike the previous procedure. Further, TradeNAVI which is an integrated trade information service has more abundant information to be usable through the connection with the relevant websites, such as Korea Institute of Intellectual Property, etc. It provides information of major countries, such as the US, China, Japan, etc., formed in separated pages by countries, to increase the users¡¯ convenience.

Furthermore, this website will add an expert¡¯s column to present an explanation and implication of a major dispute case and provide a breaking news service of a daily dispute customized by the six industrial fields, such as information and communication, chemistry, bio, mechanics and materials.

4. Chinese government officials experienced the IP Korean wave (Hallyu)

- KIPO and KOTRA jointly invited Chinese officials in charge of IP to the Republic of Korea for IP training.

KIPO and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) jointly invited 10 officials in charge of Chinese IP protection services to the Republic of Korea, to perform the IP field training.

Those who attended the training consisted of the judges and officials handling the IPR-related jurisdiction and administrative services in the People¡¯s Court and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) of the People¡¯s Republic of China.

Unlike the past of inviting a group of the officials of the organization related to the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) of the People¡¯s Republic of China, this time was featured by inviting the officials by dividing the border organization (maritime customs) and administrative and judicial organizations (court, SAIC) and providing customized programs for the training.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. YuMee LEE (042-481-8227), officer of the IP Protection and Support Dept under the Intellectual Property Protection & International Cooperation Bureau.
