1. A 12th international Patent Information Expo (PATINEX 2016) was held
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) held the PATINEX 2016 for two days starting September 1, 2016 at the Seoul Imperial Palace Hotel, on the subject of ¡®IP Knowledge at the Core of Business Success¡¯.
This 12th PATINEX 2016 is the only Korean event of international patent information, which consists of a conference including a presentation and discussion of patent information experts throughout the world and an exhibition to introduce diverse products of patent information service business companies.
On September 1, the first day of the event, Mr. Jason Kenagy, Vice President of Qualcomm, delivered a keynote speech on the continuous growth of business companies and the strategic value of IP. Those in charge of IP in Ocean Tomo, a US company specializing in transactions, and Nitto Denko, a Japanese global chemical company, led a lecture and panel discussion on patent information analysis and management plans in the position of markets and companies.
On September 2, the second day of the event, patent information using cases and plans of global markets, such as the USA, China and India, were introduced. Also, a diversified speech of Korean and foreign speakers were provided regarding the patent information trends in the fields of artificial intelligence, bio and Internet of things which are considered as future technologies.
2. Small and medium companies lead the Korean domestic game industry
- The number of trademark applications related to mobile games increased by 2.2 times and 70% of these applications were filed by small and medium companies.
While the Pokemon GO fad has been sweeping all over the world, the number of trademark applications related to mobile games has steadily increased by Korean small and medium companies.
According to KIPO, the total number of trademark applications related to the online games during 2015 was 2,289, showing a decrease of ¡â4.6% compared with the previous year with 2,401. However, the number of trademark applications related to the mobile games was 980, showing an increase of 2.2 times compared with the previous year with 304, so that a growth of a mobile game industry is noted.
The online game-related trademark applications were led by small and medium companies. From the present condition of the online game-related trademark applications filed during 2012~June 2016, big companies filed 12% of the total of these applications, whereas strong medium companies filed 22% and small and medium companies filed 62%. Therefore, 84% of the total of these trademark applications was were filed by small and medium companies, leading the trademark applications in this field.
Further, 90% of the mobile game-related trademark applications filed during 2012~June 2016 were filed by strong medium companies (20%) and small and medium companies (70%).
3. The filing of patent applications for the technology of automatically diagnosing electric power equipment
The technology of sensing in advance abnormalities of electric power equipment and automatically diagnosing them has been steadily developed.
KIPO announced that the number of patent applications related to the technology of automatically diagnosing abnormalities of electric power equipment to supply electricity and informing a manager of a failure if it occurs has been steadily increased.
According to KIPO, the number of patent applications related to the technology of automatically diagnosing electric power equipment totaled only 29 for 2000~2002 but increased to 51 for 2003~2005, 80 for 2006~2008, 174 for 2009~2011 and 277 for 2012~2014, showing that the relevant technology has been actively developed with the increase in the amount of electricity used.
This is considered as preparing for a major blackout or emergency state by diagnosing and managing the electric power equipment in real time by using the technology of automatically diagnosing electric power equipment while the amount of electricity used has increased.
4. An outstanding trademark in Korean is found to be awarded
- To encourage people to use trademarks in the Korean language, Hanguel, KIPO finds to select the trademarks using the beautiful Korean language saturated with Korean emotion.
KIPO announced to select an outstanding trademark in Korean to be awarded, to spread the use of Hanguel trademarks.
The selection and award of outstanding Hanguel trademarks will be co-sponsored by KIPO and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and will be awarded with the cooperation of the National Institute of the Korean Language.
This event has been prepared to encourage the use of Hangeul trademarks which are easily called, felt friendly and refined while foreign language trademarks or netizens¡¯ term trademarks of unknown nationality overflow throughout the society.
