1. Please use patent data to preoccupy a future market.

- A patent Information Expo (PATINEX 2021) was held online from September 6, 2021.

A place was prepared to experience intellectual property information services to share various strategies to utilize patent data which are core intangible assets of a company and to predict a future through the analysis of updated technological trends, such as bigdata, AI, etc.

According to KIPO, a 17th ¡°PATINEX 2021¡± event was held online for 5 days, from September 6th through 10th, 2021. PATINEX 2021, an international patent information fair which is the largest exhibition in Korea, has been held a total of 16 times since 2005.

On the topic of ¡®digital transformation era, strategical utilization of IP data¡¯, this year¡¯s event showed a diversity of IP information services including technology search and analysis, technology commercialization, legal advice, etc. by about 30 Korean and foreign companies and agencies attended.

The online event site forms a ¡®conference section¡¯ (for an opening ceremony, a case presentation, a new product announcement, etc.) in which a topic presentation and a new product announcement, etc. were performed, and an ¡®experience and exhibition section¡¯ (for an online exhibition, experience/event room, etc.) in which people could experience various IP information services.

In the opening ceremony, Kwang Hyung LEE, President of KAIST gave a keynote speech on the topic of ¡®IP strategies in the era of great transformation¡¯ and then diverse cases were presented regarding the future technology and IP, such as ¡®open source and MS¡¯, ¡®IP inside smart livestock age¡¯, etc.

At the same time, in the new product announcement section, Korean and foreign IP information service companies introduced newly released various services and the major intellectual property offices (South Korea, US, Europe, Japan, China and Singapore) presented the polices to provide and use IP data.

In the online exhibition section, viewers freely experienced the IP information services provided by the exhibition companies and could get real-time consultation. During the event period, a prize was given to a visitor through lottery.

Additionally, the ¡®PATINEX full-time homepage¡¯ is operated from this year, to be used as a platform to draw a continuing interest in the IP information service business and to connect IP information service demanders and suppliers all the time.

2. The patent examination standards in the 4th industrial convergence technology field are established with experts.

- KIPO has started an ¡®expert forum in the 4th industrial convergence technology field¡¯.

To reflect a voice from a field expert in the 4th industry-related convergence technology field including artificial intelligence, etc., KIPO formed the ¡®expert forum in the 4th industrial convergence technology field¡¯ and held a first meeting online on September 3, 2021.

Since technologies have converged in various fields focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and including bio•health care, Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous driving, smart manufacturing, etc., opinions from experts in various fields are needed in order to prepare the patent examination standards to meet such a new technology flow.

The ¡®¡®expert forum in the 4th industrial convergence technology field¡¯ divides into the AI technology division, the bio•health care technology division, and the system improvement division, and each division forms of about 10 experts in law, technology and intellectual property.

In the AI technology division and the bio•health care technology division, the technical experts in the relevant fields and the IP experts attended to discuss the patent examination standards suitable for the industrial fields.

The system improvement division formed of legal experts and IP experts will review the patent systems and examination directions of a particular field, focusing on many IP issues related to AI and bio•health care having their application fields which are rapidly expanded as the core technology of the 4th industrial revolution.

3. The number of patent applications relating to the online • offline convergence and the latest information and communication technology application service has increased.

As life and consumption methods have changed due to COVID-19, the number of items which are transacted by electronic commerce has been diversified and the service to which the latest information and communication technology is applied is expected to be provided without online -off line distinction.

The Korea International Trade Association and the Software Policy & Research Institute picked up omnichannel (integrated distribution network), live commerce (real-time communication sales), augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR), smart distribution, individualized and customized services as the technologies to lead a future electronic commerce market and they published that the number of the relevant patent applications continued to increase since 2017.

The trend of the relevant patent applications is specifically reviewed as follows:

An omnichannel makes it free to order and receive a product by linking many online and offline stores owned by distribution companies and enables users to use combined points. The number of patent applications relating to an omnichannel was 642 in 2017 and then continued to increase to 1,163 in 2020, showing an increase of 15.9% compared to 2019.

The filing of patent applications relating to a live commerce which uses real-time communications as a weapon by using SNS-based influencers was stagnant from 2017 to 2019 (as 800 applications) and then explosively increased to 1,543 in 2020, with an increase of 85.7% compared to 2019.

The number of patent applications relating to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) interfaces which enable to wear and purchase goods in the AR and VR, without a direct visit was 881 in 2020 with an increase of 13.4% compared to 2019, by reflecting the market demand, together with the high performance of a smart phone and the supply spread of user experience (UX) implementation equipment.

The total of patent applications relating to smart distributions which is able to minimize a product delivery time by making a hub of logistics centers and using robots and drones was not many but increased by 30.1% to 367 in 2019 compared to 2018 and by 18.5% to 435 in 2020 compared to 2019.

The patent applications relating to individualized and customized services which recommend products to satisfy consumers by applying bigdata and AI were steadily filed every year and then, 989 applications were filed in 2020 with an increase of 39.9% compared to the previous year.

4. The number of patent applications related to the technology of creating a safe workplace based on the 5-generation mobile telecommunication has increased.

According to KIPO, the number of patent applications relating to the technology of creating a 5G-based safe workplace was 6 in 2014 and 9 in 2015 and then rapidly increased to 58 in 2018 and to 110 in 2019

Upon reviewing the detailed status of the patent applications filed over the last 7 years, 118 applications (44%) were for the technology of issuing an alert by detecting, in real-time, a disaster situation such as fire, etc., 58 (21%) for the technology of giving an evacuation notice or an initial response in case of disaster, 51 (19%) for the technology of predicting and diagnosing a disaster by using bigdata, etc., and 44 (16%) for the disaster safety communication network technology of communicating the situation quickly.

The percentages of these relevant patent applications by applicants are that: 140 applications (52.0%) were filed by small and medium companies and mid-sized companies, followed by 52 (19%) by individuals, 36 (13%) by universities and research institutes, 35 (13.0%) by big companies, and 8 (3%) by the others (foreigners, etc.).

The major patent applications are to display safety information on a safety helmet by sensing, in real-time, the situation information through a sensor, to display a fire location and a evacuation route in case of fire, or to diagnose safety of a bridge by taking a picture of the bridge which is dangerous for a human to check by using a drone and analyzing, in a real-time, the data.

The technology of creating a 5G-based safe workplace has expanded to many different fields for disaster safety or life safety, by converging IoT, bigdata which are the 4th industrial revolution technologies, based on the features of superhigh speed, ultra-low latency and hyperconnectivity of the 5G communication.

Upon reviewing the trend of the technology of creating the 5G-based safe workplace, the worldwide 5G convergence industrial size is expected to be US$1.3 trillion in which a public safety will be 13%.

The Korean disaster safety industrial market was counted as 47.34 trillion Korea Won as of 2019. The disaster safety technology has been progressed as a smart disaster safety technology by converging with 5G, IoT and AI. ¡¡
